Amidst all these, it is a sight to see throngs of Filipino people at the Lucky Plaza every Saturday and Sunday. You should see how we literally fill the building and its small space outside.Aha! Lucky Plaza(located along Orchard Road) is known here as the "Palengke".This is the mall where several Philippine remittance stalls are located. These remittance stalls(such as the iRemit http://www.myiremit.com/, BTI http://www.eguide.com.sg/company-114598-btipesosexpress-Singapore,Asia.html, Metro, Western Union http://corporate.westernunion.com/asia_pacific.html) allow the Filipino worker to send his or her hard earned income to his loved ones in the Philippines. With the Filipinos flocking this mall, it is no wonder why most of the ads here are in Tagalog.Gee! A Mall specifically for Filipinos here in Singapore!
As a new comer in Singapore, one of the challenges are the local foods. Most of their foods are served superbly Hot! Hot with those red tidbits of chilli that have been sprinkled on your food. Whew!!! My Singaporean friends say that these chilli are meant to be medecinal...Aarrggghh!!!! Indeed, it helped in oozing out some liquids out of my eyelids and my nose! So far, I have learned to be fast enough in telling the Auntie or the Uncle the "No Chilli please!" phrase. By the way, the word Uncle or Auntie here does not mean that he or she is a relative. It is their lingo in addressing an old lady or an old man whose real name is unknown.
In the short span that I have stayed here, I have seen how the Filipinos transform, adopting the different world that is Singapore. They accepted the strict policies, they became a good citizen to this foreign land...Hence, I wonder... Aren't our laws in the Philippines that strict enough? Or, are we too lacks to implement and to accept laws that are intended to give some betterment to our country?
